EMG Signs of Motor Units’ Enlargement in Stroke Survivors

چکیده
The degeneration of lower motoneurons has often been reported in stroke survivors, with possible collateral reinnervation from the surviving to denervated muscle fibers. Under this assumption, a would be expected increase size motor units paretic muscles. We indirectly address issue electrical stimulation and surface electromyography, asking whether leads greater variations amplitude M waves elicited muscles than contralateral, non-paretic Current pulses at progressively intensities were applied musculocutaneous nerve, stimulating supplying biceps brachii eight patients. increases consecutively, hereafter defined as increments, was considered evaluate changes innervation ratio following stroke. Our findings showed that patients presented significantly (p = 0.016) increments limbs. This result corroborates notion takes place after stroke, enlarging units’ magnitude responses. Therefore, non-invasive analysis proposed here may useful for health professionals assess disease progression by tracking neuromuscular likely associated clinical outcomes such muscles’ strength.

Predictive Value of Somatosensation for Manual Dexterity and Upper Limb Motor Function in Stroke Survivors
Objectives: One of the most disabling impairments following stroke is upper limb impairment. Despite the important role of somatosensory function in motor control and high prevalence of somatosensory deficits in stroke survivors, little attention has been paid to its effect on UE motor function in chronic stroke survivors. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the correlation between differ...
متن کاملStroke mimics in patients with clinical signs of stroke
Background: Stroke mimic is a major diagnostic challenge and may be difficult to distinguish from real strokes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative frequency of stroke mimics in patients with clinical signs of stroke. Methods: In this cross sectional-study, the medical records of 1985 patients with stroke admitted to Poursina Hospital were enrolled using the census technique. ...
متن کاملEffects of Upper Extremity Coordination Exercises Based on Fatigue Prediction on Upper Extremity Sensory-motor Functions in Chronic Stroke Survivors
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of upper extremity coordination exercises based on fatigue prediction on fine and gross manual dexterity, upper limb motor function, shoulder and elbow proprioception, occupational performance, and activities of daily living in chronic stroke survivors. Methods: In this pilot double-blind randomized clinical trial, 24 chronic strokes were ...
متن کاملOrigins of spontaneous firing of motor units in the spastic-paretic biceps brachii muscle of stroke survivors.
One potential expression of altered motoneuron excitability following a hemispheric stroke is the spontaneous unit firing (SUF) of motor units at rest. The elements contributing to this altered excitability could be spinal descending pathways, spinal interneuronal networks, afferent feedback, or intrinsic motoneuron properties. Our purpose was to examine the characteristics of spontaneous disch...
متن کاملTask Dependent Synchronization of Motor Units of the Medial Gastrocnemius Muscle Revealed in EMG-Currents
Human movements have to be very tightly controlled by the neuro-muscular control mechanisms. In free style ski jumps the muscular events were as short as or shorter than 50ms and inter muscular co-contractions started and were synchronized within a time range of less than 5ms [1]. The Piper rhythm shows a neuromuscular control mechanism that can be seen in the EMG during isometric contractions ...
